Assistant Manager - Travel Plaza - Tama, IA


  • Assist the General Manager with the overall management and administration of the Meskwaki Travel Plaza to increase productivity, profitability, and employee and customer satisfaction;
  • Contribute to achieving sales, revenue and performance goals, set by the MI-Support Services Manager, or as delegated by the Chief Executive Officer, or General Manager;
  • Oversee grab-n-go food service operation to ensure quality, safety, and profitability;
  • Assist in researching and establishing business relationships with vendors and suppliers, as needed;
  • Collaborate with the General Manager and the Meskwaki Fuels Department to ensure proper, safe handling and storage of fuels at the Meskwaki Travel Plaza;
  • Assist in ensuring compliance of all operational, sales and safety rules, instructions, guidelines, policies, regulations, laws, codes and licensing requirements;
  • Assist in the development, implementation, distribution and maintenance of up-to-date operational and administrative policies and procedures;
  • Assist in the development and adherence of budgets and financials;
  • May assist in monitoring daily competitor retail gasoline prices, and update the pricing schedule, as needed;
  • Assist in investigating, managing and addressing customer complaints and difficult situations;
  • Help to develop, recommend and implement improvements for processes, increased profitability, and general store improvements;
  • Ensure the store is well-stocked and maintained for cleanliness and free of safety hazards throughout the property, including all in-store areas, grounds, sidewalks/walkways and fueling station areas;
  • Report POS registers, pin-pad and fuel system errors and failures to the General Manager and maintenance staff or product vendors for assistance and/or scheduling of repairs;
  • Ensure POS advertising/signage is properly posted and up-to-date;
  • Collaborate with the General Manager to maximize capacity and effectiveness of sales fixtures, models, and visual presentations;
  • Oversee and monitor store inventory and shrinkage, and develop and implement inventory control processes along with the General Manager;
  • Report and communicate drive-offs, thefts, illegal activities, acts or threats of violence, and destruction of property to the General Manager and/or law enforcement, as necessary;
  • Prepare and submit monthly reports to the General Manager, as directed;
  • Coordinate with the General Manager and Supervisors to ensure completion of required audit activities;
  • Participate in staff recruitment efforts and hire recommendations, to ensure the selection of individuals meeting or exceeding company and customer expectations;
  • Provide leadership, training, guidance and teambuilding opportunities to ensure customer service satisfaction is prioritized and demonstrated by all subordinates and staff;
  • Assist in supervising, directing and assigning/delegating duties and work schedules for all travel plaza supervisors and employees to ensure adequate staff scheduling and completion of daily assignments and activities, and optimal customer service, including the assignment/re-assignment of supervisors and employees;
  • Assist in facilitating monthly supervisor meetings and ensuring information is distributed to all staff via proper chain of command;
  • Conduct, oversee and ensure timely completion of departmental Employee Performance Reviews, and evaluations, as necessary;
  • Perform employee conduct investigations, and issue corrective and/or disciplinary actions, as needed, or as advised by the MI-Support Services Manager, the Human Resources Director, the Chief Executive Officer, or the General Manager;
  • Oversee and monitor cash overages/ shortages and issue corrective actions accordingly;
  • Provide guidance and/or direction to supervisors in emergency situations outside normal working hours, as needed;
  • Assist the General Manager with maintaining and securing all business and personnel files and records;
  • Ensure immediate communication and delivery of personnel matters and documents to the Human Resources Department;
  • Collaborate with the General Manager and Marketing Staff in the development advertisements and other promotional activities;
  • Report and communicate employee and customer injuries and/or medical emergencies to management and/or law enforcement/emergency medical personnel, as necessary;
  • Coordinate, collaborate and assist with departmental requests from Meskwaki, Inc. Management, and Tribal Operations, as directed;
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Associate’s Degree in Business Management related field and three years of Convenience Store/Truck Stop experience including some management experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Must possess strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively, make quick, well-informed decisions, and provide a high-level of customer service;
  • Must understand, exhibit, demonstrate and maintain a high level of professionalism, integrity and ethical workplace conduct and behaviors;

Cashier/Convenience Store - Travel Plaza - Tama, IA


Cashiers are the front-line representatives of the Meskwaki Travel Plaza, providing
welcoming, professional and helpful service, while demonstrating the ability to provide a quick and
accurate check-out process. Duties include the sale of fuel, gifts, tobacco products, deli items, groceries,
and other convenience products, maintaining product stock levels, store cleaning, loss prevention, and
cashier balancing and reporting.


  • Provide quick, courteous and helpful customer service;
  • Greet, interact and assist customers with selection and sales of merchandise;
  • Comply with all company rules and policies;
  • Operate cash register and payment systems, fueling authorization systems, and CAT weigh scale;
  • Perform age verification for sale of tobacco products;
  • Responsible for the financial activities of assigned register, including the completion, filing, and
    balancing of cash/credit/charge transactions, casino gas coupons, employee discounts, and
    cashier shift reporting;
  • Assist in cleaning and maintenance of interior and exterior areas, such as food and beverage
    stations and dispensers, work stations, shelves, retail products, floors, bathrooms, showers,
    windows, and trucker lounge areas, as assigned;
  • Assist in emptying garbage cans, and cleaning, shoveling and treating sidewalks, as necessary;

The Program Support Assistant is responsible for providing administrative support to team members through the planning and implementation to a department or series of department within a larger organization. The administrative support includes duties such as answering phones and emails, filing, and managing schedules, while also assisting in budget oversight and event planning. This role specifically serves the department of Pest Control and S. A. F. E.

Fuel Truck Driver - Meskwaki Fuels - Tama, IA



  • Ensure safe and responsible transportation and storage of fuels according to regulations, and  safety and environmental standards; 
  • Pick-up fuel loads at Magellan Pipeline Company terminal and deliver to the Meskwaki Travel  Plaza; 
  • Comply with Iowa Department of Transportation regulations and requirements for interstate  transportation of fuels; 
  • Assist in compliance with truck and trailer inspection and operational requirements; Comply with all Employer and DOT-FMCSA (Department of Transportation-Federal Motor  Carrier Safety Administration) Drug and Alcohol testing requirements; 
  • Complete all driver logs and documentation, as required; 
  • Assist in monitoring fuel levels at the Meskwaki Travel Plaza to ensure adequate availability of  fuels and to determine the amount and type of fuel needed for delivery; 
  • Comply with local and federal fuel transportation and storage requirements; Adhere and comply with departmental safety standards and requirements; Maintain licensure, training requirements/certifications and comply with all alcohol and drug  testing requirements;  
  • Assist Meskwaki Travel Plaza Management with inspections and compliance with fuel storage and handling requirements, as directed by the Fuels General Manager; 
  • Assist in performing routine cleaning, maintenance, diagnostics and repairs of trucks, trailers,  equipment, machinery and instruments; 
  • Inspect completed maintenance and repairs to verify compliance of specifications, regulations,  company standards, and safety standards; 
  • Notify Fuels General Manager of potential safety hazards and violations;

  • High school diploma or equivalent, and 2 years of over-the-road tanker truck driving  experience; 
  • Must possess and maintain a valid CDL-A with Tanker and Hazmat Endorsement; Must obtain Medical Examiner Commercial Driver Medical Certification; 
  • Must possess a clear driving record and be insurable by our insurance provider; Must possess knowledge of applicable Federal, State and Local regulatory requirements for  handling, storage and transportation of refined fuel and/or crude oil products; Excellent interpersonal skills, strong oral and written communication; 
  • Must pass pre-employment and random alcohol and drug testing;
  • Must successfully complete background investigation. 


  • Must be able to reach with arm and hands to perform inspection, maintenance and repair duties  when needed.
